Life Skills at Ashlyns School & the power of connection through food 🍲

Updated: Apr 9

We had our first Life Skills session of the spring term with Year 12 students at Ashlyns School. Great students, so keen to learn and engaged in trying new things.

Later on in the evening, I was watching Rick Stein in India when he met with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He spoke about the importance and significance of sharing food with others. This is one of our core values at The Swan Youth Project and whilst the food is important, it’s the connections we make through food that gives it further value.

Whether we are meeting basic food needs, sharing food through Life Skills, or hosting the Warm Cafe, we are all connecting on a level playing field through food. This is also true for the people at Northchurch Social Centre and Berkhamsted Together who are helping with the community food bank.

The lunch provided for Peabody, Lux Property Services, and CPS was exactly this — senior management through to the staff on the renovation front all sharing a plate of food and coming together to help our charity.

Food is our most basic need, but it has a long-lasting positive impact through these connections. When we hear so much negative in the media, I feel so privileged to work and live in a community that shows care and connection through food.

Thanks to all involved in this amazing journey. 💛
