An Inspiring Evening with Roman Kemp

Members of The Swan Youth Project had the opportunity to hear Roman Kemp speak at the Centenary Theatre in Berkhamsted about his own experiences with mental health, vulnerability and losing his best friend Joe to suicide.

It was a very honest and emotional evening.

Roman spoke openly about his own mental health struggles and the importance of looking out for the people around us. Despite everything he has achieved in his career, what really came across was how genuine and down to earth he was when talking about some incredibly difficult experiences.

For our young people, it was a chance to hear someone they recognise and respect talking openly about things that can sometimes be difficult to say out loud.

One of the strongest messages of the evening was that it is OK to be vulnerable. We can be the friend who checks in, the person who listens, or simply someone who shows compassion when another person needs it.

Sometimes asking “Are you OK?” once isn't enough. Ask again and give someone the chance to answer honestly.

It was an emotional evening for all of us and an important experience for our members.

A huge thank you to Berkhamsted School for providing complimentary tickets and giving young people from The Swan the opportunity to be there.

And huge respect to Roman Kemp for speaking so openly about his experiences and using his voice to encourage others to talk about mental health.
